OpenADR Integration

Local congestion support is one of the next big things in European grids, and the OpenADR protocol seems to be in favour by many DSOs. (it's already widely-used in the U.S.) In The Netherlands, 3 DSOs are piloting it with charging hubs.

In The Netherlands, ELaad (innovation lab of Dutch DSOs) is using FlexMeasures and contributed a new plugin: flexmeasures-openadr3 🎉

Thanks to ElaadNL for the code contribution. And I'm excited we are now connecting LFEnergy projects to form full-stack open solutions! (this connects FlexMeasures and OpenLeadr - the OpenADR project focusing more on the DSO side).

If you want to see a full demo of integrating a top-level node (the DSO side) with an end-level node (the EMS side), using the two projects and the new plugin, you are in luck, as we showcased that on the LF Energy Summit Europe 2026:

With ElaadNL's Nick Van Der Burgt, I presented how you can not only use an open protocol between DSO and EMS/aggregator, but also use opensource technology for your local site optimization - which plays nice with the DSO's dynamic requests.

Nick's demo covers entering and broadcasting dynamic congestion signals for the upcoming day. Plus, on the aggregator/EMS side, he shows how to subscribe to these signals and how a new one will influence the BTM planning of FlexMeasures.
